Helen Mae Montgomery, 93, formerly of Whitewood, died Sunday, April 5, 2015, at Spearfish Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be Friday, April 10th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 11, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at the Whitewood Presbyterian Church with Pastor Jil Jennewein officiating. Burial will follow at the Whitewood Cemetery.
Helen was born September 20, 1921, at Whitewood, SD, to Bern and Blanche (Casteel) Shoop. She grew up in Whitewood where she attended school and graduated from Whitewood High School. She attended Black Hills Teacher's College and taught at a rural Whitewood school for one year.
Helen moved to Sacramento where she worked as a riveter in the aircraft industry during WWII. While in California, her boyfriend from South Dakota called her and proposed. He went to California to bring her home and she married George Montgomery August 3, 1942, in Reno, NV, on their way back to South Dakota. They lived in Rapid City for a short time before moving to Whitewood. While in Whitewood, they owned Montgomery's Market and Grocery Store in the 50's and 60's. Helen then worked as a secretary in the Radiology Department at Fort Meade for several years.
Helen enjoyed traveling, camping, and was an avid bridge player. She also enjoyed crocheting, flower gardening, canning, and was a wonderful cook and baker, especially pies.
Survivors include one son, George (Karen) Montgomery, Gillette, WY; one daughter, Judy Martinkus, Rapid City; one sister, Jayne (Ray) Clark, Casper, WY; five grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George in 1982; sister, Maryetta Scruton; and two half-brothers.
A memorial has been established to the Whitewood Presbyterian Church.
