Helen Helicia Sarviel, 78, Sturgis, died Friday, April 21, 2006, at her residence.
A memorial service will be held later. Arrangements are under the direction of Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Helen was born June 15, 1927, in Rapid City, to Rasmus and Frances (Devers) Henriks. She grew up in Sturgis and graduated from Rapid City High School. She received her BS in Education at South Dakota State University (SDSU) in Brookings. Helen taught at Sturgis High School for two years. She married Edward Sarviel at Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis on Nov. 17, 1951.
The couple moved to San Diego, Calif., where she taught school for 37 years, every grade except kindergarten. After retirement, she became a Student Teacher's Supervisor.
She also got her Master's Degree in Special Education.
They returned to Sturgis 13 years ago where they have lived at the Henriks' place in Pleasant Valley.
Helen was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for 55 years. She was a member of the Republican Party and was active all her life.
Survivors include her husband, Ed Sarviel, Sturgis; two sons, Steven Edward Sarviel and Craig Douglas Sarviel, both of San Diego, Calif.; and one daughter, Yvonne Dee Vee Sarviel, San Diego, Calif.
Her parents; one son, Barry Conrad Sarviel; and one brother, Donald Henriks, preceded her in death.
