Herbert Louis Baldwin, 91, of Sturgis, SD, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2014, at the Department of Veterans Affairs, Ft. Meade.
Herbert was born February 4, 1924, in Newell, SD, to Sophia C. and Louis B. Baldwin. He attended school in the lower grades in Red Owl schools and in the Vale community where he graduated from High School in 1943 with a class of ten. Herbert worked on his father's ranch, helping with sheep, cattle, and farming.
Herb proudly served his country, as a member of the US Army from December 29, 1948, to August 6, 1949.
On March 1, 1950, he married Goldie Miller. They lived and worked on his father's ranch from 1950 to 1961. He later worked as an electrician, plumber, carpenter, and ranch hand, building their home in Sturgis. They raised three daughters; Teresa, Renee, and Tina. After 41 years of marriage, Goldie passed away in 1991.
Much of Herb s enjoyment was to read about our nation's history, rock and artifact hunting, photography, bottle digging, hunting, fishing, and gold panning.
Herb retired from the S D Highway Dept. in 1983 where he had served as Maintenance Supervisor for 22 years.
Herb was a founding/lifetime member of the Western Dakota Antique Club and participated in the WDAC Steam and Gas threshing Bee since 1969. He was an active member of the Buttons and Bows Square Dance Club.
In 1992, Herb married a high school classmate, Veora Johnson Bliss. They had been married for 23 years.
He is survived by his wife, Veora; sister, Helen Komes, Sturgis, SD; a brother, Duane Baldwin, Yuma, AZ; three daughters, Teresa Baldwin of Germantown, MD, Renee Kluck of Sturgis, and Tina Cox of Greenbrier, TN; eleven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; six step-children; and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Herb was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 41 years, Goldie Baldwin; and a sister, Edith Palmer.
Visitation will be Sunday, February 22nd from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 23, 2015, at 1:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Pastor Henrique Fleming and Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard, will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Memorials have been established to the Memorial Building at Western Dakota Antique Club and the Children's Miracle Network.
