Herbert Hoover Morrell, 83, Sturgis, died Saturday, June 16, 2012 at the Sturgis Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be noon until 4 p.m. and 6 until 9 p.m. on Monday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Rev. Denzel Nonhof officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Herbert was born April 30, 1929, in Spence County, GA, to Russell and Nila (Sheldon) Morrell. His family moved to Florida when he was 4 years old. Herb attended school and attended high school in Auburndale, FL. He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1946. Herb served 3 ½ years stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base while reactivating the Base as an SAC Command. He was one of the first 50 servicemen to be brought in for reenlistment for a short time. Herb received his honorable discharge in April of 1950.
Herb married Kathleen Borup on April 7, 1948, in Sturgis. They lived in Rapid City for two years before moving to Sturgis. He worked for Shorty Howard at the Standard Oil station in Sturgis, then the Texaco Co. for two years. Herb went to work for the Montana Dakota Utility Co. in 1959 and worked for MDU for 32 years until his retirement in 1991.
His main interest in life was his loving wife, his sons and daughter-in-laws, his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and his friends. Herb was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Good Sam, Key City Ramblers, Black Hills Hillbillies, Jackpine Gypsies Club, the VFW, and a former member of the Elks Lodge in Deadwood. He was also a member of the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department for 14 years.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Morrell, Sturgis; two sons, Larry (Candy) Morrell, Sturgis, and Gary (Anna) Morrell, Tucson, AZ; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Katherine Branham, Tampa, FL, and Marie (Leroy) Lawrence, Haines City, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Philip, Russell and Marty.
Memorials have been established to the First Presbyterian Church.
