Herman "Lee" McElwain was born June 1, 1935, to Norbert and Doris (Younke) McElwain in Compton, CA. His father died when he was 2 years old. His mother later married John Shurvinton.
Lee lived in California until he was 13 years old. They moved to Wyoming when his parents bought a ranch near Moorcroft. He attended school in Moorcroft. In 1955, he met and married Jeanette Follette, and on October 30th they would have been married 64 years. Lee has worked in many jobs including diesel mechanics, manager of many service stations, a bulk plant, and also worked for Homestake. Since retiring, he has run a sharpening shop and done some woodworking. He has been making toy cars for the past several years which he gave away to Toys for Tots, Salvation Army, and other places.
Herman "Lee" McElwain, 84, of Sturgis died October 4, 2019, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette; two sons, Darrell, Sioux Falls, and Ken, Sturgis; eleven grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, JB and Tom; and a daughter, Lorna.
Graveside services will be 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8, 2019, at Bear Butte Cemetery.
