Hobert 'Stub' Gilles 86 of Spearfish formerly of the Marcus area passed away Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Visitation will be 1-8p.m. Sunday, December 4, 2005 at Black Hills Funeral Home & Cremation Services at Sturgis. A funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 5, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church at Sturgis, with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with full military honors by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard. Stub was born June 18, 1919 at Veblen, SD to John & Minnie (Brandt) Gilles. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp for a year and then served in the United States Army during WWII from 1941 until 1945. After the war he married Doris Koss in 1948. Together they ranched 1 mile north of Marcus, SD on the Koss family homestead. Stub also hauled hay in the surrounding areas from 1958 - 1987. On March 4, 1989 he married Kathleen Reed in Sturgis. Together they moved to the Black Hills in 1994 after Stub retired from ranching. He was a member of the VFW, Farmers Union Cooperative, and a life member of the American Legion. Hobbies include fishing, playing cards, visiting with neighbors, and after his retirement he loved to go camping. Survivors include wife Kathleen of Spearfish, sons Dean and Sherry Gilles of Augusta, GA, Rex and Shirley Gilles of Red Owl, stepchildren Donald & Bonnie Reed of Alliance, NE, Jim & Peggy David of Sheridan, WY, 2 grandchildren Daphne Gilles of Rapid City, Brandon Gilles of Red Owl, step-grandchildren Jim Reed of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Lorie Eggleston of Belvidere, SD, and 2 great grandchildren. His wife Doris in 1987, two sons Robert and Maurice, and parents preceded him in death. A memorial has been established to the Enning Volunteer Fire Department in Stub's name.
