Obituary

Ida Helena Gunderson, 98, Sturgis and formerly of Buffalo, SD, died Monday, January 18, 2010, at the Sturgis Regional Senior Care Center.

Visitation will be 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with the family present. Visitation resumes at 8 a.m. until time of services on Friday.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, January 22, 2010 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Rev. Michael Fox officiating. Burial follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

A memorial has been established.

Ida was born December 29, 1911, at Bullock, SD, to John and Anna (Herrala) Jernberg. She grew up attending country school through the 8th grade. She married and raised two children, while owning and operating a hardware store in Gascoyne, ND. She left in 1951 and moved to Buffalo, SD, where she worked at various jobs to support her children.

She married Peter Gunderson at Baker, MT, on November 13, 1959. They ranched in the Ladner, Camp Crook and Harding communities for several years before retiring in Buffalo.

Ida was an outdoors person. She enjoyed watching her birds. She also kept track of the fog and sun dogs to check the accuracy of the weather. She was a "great" grandma and took the grandchildren to the little Missouri river where she grew up to have fun.

Survivors include her son Larry (Norma) Nelson, Sturgis; one daughter, Diana (Billy) Toft, Belvidere, IL; one brother, Eino Jernberg, Reno, NV; 15 grandchildren, Larry (Kim) Nelson, Jim (Sara) Nelson, Tina (Clint) Brengle, Nicole (Kevin) Forrester, Mike (Shelli) Nelson, Dave (Jana) Nelson, Leslee (Curt) Wood, Colleen (Mike) Grant, Laurie (Jamie) McVay, Chanda (Preston) Findley, Kristi (Mato) Standing High, Coty (Scott) Roush, Dakota (Jennifer) Toft, Shana (Scot) Dobbs, Marla Toft, Ray Rednour; and 43 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Peter; four sisters, Alina, Julia, Elma, and Esther; three brothers, Innes, Hubert and Matt; one great granddaughter, Ashley.
