Marie was born November 28, 1919, at Rapid City, SD, to Leo and Martha (Raybourne) Ashland. She grew up in the Elk Creek area. She attended
country school until the ninth grade when she began her high school education in Sturgis. On June 3, 1946, she married George Wurnig at the Cathedral in Rapid City. They ranched at Hereford, SD, until they retired in 1980 and moved to Sturgis. She lived there until her death. Marie was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the Black Hills Rosary Makers. In her final days she could be found making rosaries for the missions in Africa.
Marie Wurnig, 97, Sturgis, died Thursday, November 2, 2017, at Sturgis Regional Hospital. Survivors include her three daughters, Ann Mooney, Frankie (Pat) Deering, and Marty Hanson; seven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; one greatgreat-granddaughter; and a special friend,
Roberta Freeman. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and a son-in-law.
Memorials have been established to St. Jude's Hospital and the Knights of Columbus.
