Obituary

Irene Pearl Sorg Hintz, 98, Faith, passed away at her home Sunday, August 24, 2014.

Visitation will be Friday, August 29th from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Council Room at the Faith Community Center with the family present.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 30, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at the Faith Community Center with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at the Faith Cemetery.

Irene was born May 11, 1916, in a sod house south of Meadow, SD, to Gottlieb and Mary (Suffa) Sorg. She attended the Coal Springs School for 8 years, Lemmon High and the Grand Central High School. Being the fourth daughter of five girls, Irene willing to be outside, worked along-side her father.

Irene met her future husband, Tobias Hintz, in the church they both attended. With the help of Loydia and Ralph Baker (Irene's oldest sister and brother-in-law), Irene and Tiby eloped and were united in marriage June 15, 1938, at Red Elm, SD. To this union, Carole Elaine, Gene Allen, and Dennis Tobias were born.

They lived the early years of their marriage in the Meadow area. In 1964, they moved to Eagle Butte, SD. Irene worked as a maid for the Wheel Inn Motel, then as caregiver/housemother at SDYA House. In the later 1970's Irene started a daycare in her own home where she babysat until she was 82 years old. Irene was proud of all the children she cared for. In later years, it was not out of character to announce when she saw them that she had "changed their diapers." Irene was a very strong woman and overcame many obstacles in her life. In the fall of 2007, Irene bought a house in Faith and moved there.

She is survived by her daughter, Carole (Tom) Sternad, Faith; son, Gene Hintz, Colorado; daughter-in-law, Judy Hintz, Dickinson, ND; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son; four sisters and their husbands; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.

Memorials have been established to the Faith Ambulance and the Elm Springs Community Church.
