Porcupine | Our loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Irene Mary Tibbitts passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 in Hot Springs, SD. Irene was born to Joseph and Rosa (Janis) Crazy Thunder on June 28, 1925 on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and lived in the Old Crazy Horse District at that time. Shortly after World War II ended, Irene married Theodore (Red) Tibbitts and began their journey together in living on five Indian Reservations across South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska. Irene was a great and wonderful housewife and mother to three sons, Alwin (Melanie) Tibbitts in Cheyenne, WY, William Tibbitts in Washington D.C., and Donald Tibbitts in Porcupine, SD. Irene was a caring grandmother to Jeremiah Tibbitts, Monroe, WA; Emily Tibbitts, Hot Springs, SD; and Justin (Gus) Tibbitts, Junction City, OR; and a great grandmother to Wyatt Tibbitts, Hot Springs, SD, and Alexander Tibbitts, Monroe, WA. She loved them dearly and whenever she could, she loved to cook for them. We want to thank Emily and Wyatt Tibbitts and Deann Arneson who made our mother's last days fun and happy. Irene was preceded in death by her parents and loving husband Theodore, and her brothers and sisters. Irene leaves behind many cousins, nieces, and nephews that are scattered across the country. She was the last elder of the Crazy Thunder family and may her glorious journey with the Creator bring a life of joy and happiness as she again watches over her family. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 13, 2015 at Black Hills Funeral Home in Sturgis, SD with Charles McGaa officiating. Irene will be interred next to her husband at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis following the service.
