Irma Genevieve Bartling, 97, Rapid City and formerly of Sturgis, died Sunday, August 16, 2009, at the Meadowbrook Manor in Rapid City.

Visitation will be noon until 9:00 p.m. on Friday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 22, 2009, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at the White Owl Cemetery.

Irma was born March 20, 1912, at a winter cattle camp north of Wall, SD, to Charles Payton and Nellie Mae (Goff) Tivis. She grew up at Tivis, SD, and attended the Tivis, Bapp-Newton, Newton, and Faith Schools. After graduating from high school in Faith, Irma married Albert Gottfried Herbst on March 7, 1934, at Dupree.

She later married Martin Hartwig Bartling in September of 1946 at Billings, MT. Martin was in the military and Irma and the children moved to Hawaii. They also lived in California and Washington, D.C. until Martin's retirement from active duty in 1969. They returned to South Dakota and ranched near Red Owl. They moved to Sturgis in the mid 80's. Irma had lived in retirement in Spearfish and also Rapid City.

Survivors include her sons, Derral R. Herbst, Honolulu, HI, Martin H. (Susan) Bartling, Vacaville, CA, and Barton C. (Sharon) Bartling, Union Center; one daughter, Terry Ann Whitmyre, Rapid City; 8 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, 4 brothers, and 2 sisters.
