Jake G. Dell, Jr., 74, of Nisland, South Dakota, left us and stepped into heaven on October 5, 2022.

Jake was born on July 5, 1948, in Belle Fourche, SD, to Jake G. Dell, Sr. and Anna (Heidrich) Dell. He graduated from Newell High School in 1966 and went on to get an auto mechanics degree from Wyoming Technical Institute. Jake was veteran of the United States Army, serving for three years, including a tour of duty in Vietnam.

Following his stint in the army Jake worked for a short time for Berguman Electric and L.P. Larson, before starting a 33-year career with the Butte County Highway Department. He was the Highway Superintendent for several years before retiring in 2007. Community was an important part of his life serving as a City of Nisland councilman for several years and being a member of the Nisland Lions Club International, American Legion, and VFW.

Jake enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and working on old farm tractors, cars, and pickups. His generosity, kindheartedness, and many talents were known by all who knew him. He was a gentle soul and will be dearly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joe Dell; sister, Elizabeth Morrow; sister-in-law, Lisa Hurd Dell; and brother-in-law, Arty Bach.

He is survived by brothers, Ray (Judy) of Nisland, SD; Ron (Colleen) of Plattsmouth, NE; Don (Mariana) of Houston, TX; Dave (Jill) of Spearfish, SD; and Rob (Lisa) of Gilbert, AZ; sisters, Mary (Mike) Fay, and Carol Bach of Belle Fourche, SD; 17 nieces and nephews; uncle, Harry (Jessie) Heidrich of Rapid City, SD; and aunt, Jean Kryzsko, Miles City, MT.

Memorial services will be Friday, October 21, 2022, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Sturgis, SD, with a rosary at 9:00 a.m. and mass at 10:00 a.m. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the Newell VFW.
