Obituary

James "Jimmy" Melvin Carlson, 96, lost his battle with covid on July 28, 2022, at the VA hospital in Oklahoma City, OK.

Jimmy was born on February 9, 1926. On a ranch near Cooper, SD, to Hazel (Plaut) and Clarence Raymond Carlson.

He joined the Army at 18 years of age and fought in the 2 nd World War under the command of General Patton. He served honorably and received many medals. He was one of a troop of GI's who liberated one of the Nazi's death camps for Jews. The skin and bone survivors tottered out to meet them with tears streaming down their faces, Jimmy never forgot the horror of that camp.

Jimmy worked at different VA hospitals, first as an orderly and then as a Physical Therapist. The hospitals included, Ft. Meade, SD, in Palo Alto, CA, and then retired from the VA hospital in Denver, CO.

He spent many happy years gardening, enjoying his many hobbies, he was a Master Carver and left many handmade treasures in which he gave to his siblings, and his nieces, and nephews.

He spent his last years with his beloved niece and husband, Hazel Eileen (Brian) Bradley.

He leaves behind one surviving sibling, Ardith Eatherton, whom he visited every afternoon, when possible. He also leaves many nieces, and nephews who he loved well.

His final resting place will be at Fort Sill, OK, National Cemetery.
