James A. Grover, 90, Newell, died Tuesday, April 01, 2014, at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish.
Visitation will be 8 a.m. until time of services at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis on Tuesday.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Burial follows with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to the Newell Volunteer Fire Department.
Jim was born August 20, 1923 at Wessington Springs, SD. He went to country school on the Lower Brule Reservation. After completing his formal education he broke horses and worked for local ranchers.
Jim entered the US Army on September 13, 1946, and was honorably discharged September 12, 1949.
On April 14, 1944 he married Vanona Jean Wilson. They lived in Eastern South Dakota and North Dakota before settling in Sturgis where Jim worked for McPherson Propane. They moved to Belle Fourche where Jim owned and operated his own propane business. Following the death of his first wife, he met Judy Marie Holt, who had also lost her spouse. The couple retired to Newell where they enjoyed their horses, wagon trains and working for a local rancher.
Jim was a 4H leader for the Wyo Dak Range Riders, life member of the Bit and Spur Saddle Club and a horsemanship judge of 35 years for Miss Rodeo South Dakota.
Survivors include his wife Judy Holt, Newell; daughters, Charel and Jim Pitts, Newcastle, WY, Vana and Glen Larcom, Humansville, MO, Roxy and Don Marti, Spearfish, Kim and Mark Watson, Moorcroft, WY, Barb and Lou DeJong, Kennebec, SD, Shawn and Jerry Jaskela, Newell, SD, Mary (Jason McChristie) Grover, Denver, CO; brother, Sam (Rosie) Grover, Phoenix, AZ; sisters, Shirley Jastorff, Council Bluffs, IA, Arlene and Durwood Bouzek, Hot Springs, SD; also 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, three sisters, two brothers, and one granddaughter.
