IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James Lewis
Hoyt
July 22, 1945 – February 28, 2025
James (Jim) L. Hoyt of Rapid City, South Dakota, died at Fort Meade VA Hospital on February 28, 2025. He was cremated and a private family service will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Jim was born on July 22, 1945, to Lewis and Blanche Hoyt, and welcomed by an older brother, Bob (Robert).
After graduating from Brandon Valley High School in 1964, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1966 and served for four years in the 43rd Artillery at Ft. Richardson, Alaska, where he served as a cook in the artillery's 4th Missile Battalion. His fond memories of Alaska lived with him his entire life
After serving in the military, Jim took over Hoyt's Standard gas station from his dad, Lewis, in Brandon, South Dakota. Years afterward, Jim moved to his beloved Black Hills. Jim worked as a salesman, owned a campground, and later, worked at the youth treatment center Chamberlain Academy.
As the years went on, Jim enjoyed refinishing guns and visiting his favorite sites in the Black Hills. He told a good story, and always enjoyed dancing and music, movies, hunting, sports, and the outdoors. He passed his love of camping, snowmobiling, and boating to his children, and now their children. His sons, Nate and Josh, were his greatest accomplishment.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Blanche Hoyt, and brother, Bob Hoyt.
He is survived by sons Nathan (Lindsay) and Joshua (Lacy); four grandchildren, Sam and Romy, and Mason and Jagger; and a nephew, Lew Hoyt.
The family asks that any donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Jim's name, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn., 38105, or at https://www.stjude.org.
