James R. Madden Sr., 51, Sturgis, died Saturday, July 4, 2009 at the Ft. Meade VA Hospital.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. until time of services at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel on Friday.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, July 10, 2009 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Ralph Vencill officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to an educational fund for his daughters.
James was born August 24, 1957 at Indianapolis, Indiana to Jerry and Evelyn (Pierson) Madden. He grew up at Newark, California and joined the Army when he was 17. He served during Vietnam.
James was a chef by trade and worked in Reno, NV.
After moving to South Dakota he met Debra Bury. They were married February 15, 1999 at Sturgis.
James was a stay at home Dad following many illnesses. He taught the family to cook. He liked to fish and camp. James was an Indiana Colt's fan as well as NASCAR. He was a dedicated and protective dad. He would help his family and friends anytime he could.
Survivors include his wife Debra Madden, Sturgis; one son James (Tracey Brown) Madden Jr., Rapid City; daughters, Dawn (Jason) Tinney, Sheridan, WY, Rebecca and Katy Madden, Sturgis; step daughters, Tamra (Tyler) Magelky, Sturgis, Shelli (Stoney) Thoresen, Sioux Falls; father Jerry Madden, Indianapolis, IN; one brother, Raymond Madden, Lakeland, FL; Sisters, Jo Rodriquez, Hollylake, TX, Kay Darden, Big Sandy, TX, Rhonda Smith, Borboraise, IL, Debbie Madden, Hollylake, TX; Also three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother and one brother, Jerry.
The family would like to express their thanks to the Ft. Meade Hospice unit and the Rapid City Regional ICU.
