IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jan
Steinle
October 13, 1950 – February 8, 2024
Jan Steinle, 73, of Sturgis, SD, died Thursday, February 8, 2024.
Jan was born in Winner, SD, on October 13, 1950. She was the oldest of four children born to Warren and Joyce (Siegmund) Astleford. Jan grew up on the family ranch northwest of White River, SD. She loved horses and especially enjoyed riding in the deep river breaks on the ranch. All twelve grades were attended at White River Public Schools. She then completed a degree in Home Economics Education at SDSU. Jan taught home economics classes at Todd County High School and at White River High School.
Jan married Wayne Steinle in White River on July 7, 1973. They lived in White River and Sioux Falls, and then made Sturgis their home. They had three sons: Jason, Nathan, and Tyler. Jan was the most amazing mom. She was significantly involved with her sons' activities: writing newspaper columns for the soccer club, being a room mother, volunteering in the school and public libraries, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, helping teach computer classes, and driving children to sports practices and games. As the boys grew older, they became heavily involved in tennis, and Jan drove them to many tournaments around the region.
Jan enjoyed weaving and embroidery. For ten years, she was a regular on the crafts circuit selling woven hoops that she created from wool and dried foliage that she had hand dyed. She also loved to read, garden, fish, and travel.
Jan co-taught at Sturgis Community Preschool for twelve years. She worked at the circulation desk at Sturgis Public Library for three years. She also was active in Sturgis United Methodist Church and Book Club.
Jan is survived by immediate family members, her husband: Wayne Steinle; sons: Jason (Mandy) Steinle and children Grace, Jackson, and Georgia of Evergreen, CO, Nathan Steinle of Pismo Beach, CA, and Tyler Steinle of Rapid City, SD; sister: Kim (Gil) Moyle of Rapid City, SD; brothers: Brad (Marcia) Astleford of Kansas City, MO, and Scott (Michele) Astleford of White River, SD; brother-in-law: Keith Steinle of Russell, KS; sister-in-law: Lana Lindsay of Great Bend, KS; ten nieces and nephews, several which are Godchildren.
