Janice Arlene Mikkelson, 69, Whitewood, died Sunday, August 28, 2011, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be Thursday from noon to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 2, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Whitewood with Rev. David Baer officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Lawn Cemetery in Lead.
Janice was born March 20, 1942, at Waubay, SD, to Earl and Ruth (Holzerland) North. She grew up at Waubay and in Lead. She graduated from Lead High School in 1961.
Janice married David Mikkelson on June 17, 1962, in Ortley, SD. To this union were born two sons, Larry and Scott. They lived on a farm in Ortley until 1982. They moved to Sturgis in 1985 and to Whitewood in 1997. From 1986 to 1992, Janice ran a day care in Sturgis.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Janice enjoyed dancing, fishing, and reading Louis L'Amour books. She also loved collecting angel figurines.
Survivors include her husband, David Mikkelson, Whitewood; two sons, Larry Mikkelson, Whitewood, and Scott (Shelly) Mikkelson, Belle Fourche; two granddaughters, Miranda and Mikenzie; one brother, Jerry (Norma) North, Clayton, CA; one sister, Barbara (Larry) Ulferts, Montevideo, MN; one aunt, Arlene Lee; one uncle, Don (Eileen) Holzerland; numerous nieces and nephews; and her special friend, Lady.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Ron North.
A memorial has been established to Muscular Dystrophy and cancer research.
