Janis (Hamm) Wickard was born, delivered by her grandmother, the 5 ^th of 7 siblings, in a sawmill camp off Sheridan Lake Road and Deadman's Canyon near the Strato Bowl on May 2 ^nd , 1927.  She passed away on January 19 ^th , 2016 in Pullman, WA.  She graduated from Rapid City High School in 1945.  She married Harry Wickard on May 29 ^th , 1947 and lived in the Black Hills for 86 years.  In 1971, Harry and Janis bought a small place near Newell and lived there until 1992.  After retiring to Rapid City, Harry and Janis thoroughly enjoyed the Canyon Lake Senior Center, including exercise classes, dances, and card games.  In the 90's, Harry and Janis made three trips to Hong Kong as son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Kathy, were there and also visited them once in Singapore.  While there, they were able to travel to China twice and once to the Philippines and Malaysia. Harry and Janis both enjoyed their granddaughters and grandsons coming to visit each summer.  In 2013, Janis moved to Washington State to be near three of her children – Cheryl, Jerry, and Bruce.

Janis was preceded in death by: her husband, Harry, on November 24 ^th , 2009; her youngest daughter, Jo Ellen Schuelke, five months later; daughter-in-law Rodella (Jerry) on November 15 ^th , 2013.  Her surviving children include Danny (Kathy) of Knoxville, TN; Cheryl Harlow (Jeff) of University Place, WA; Jerry of Pullman, WA; Bruce (Suzanne) of Pullman, WA; and Larry Schuelke of Mud Butte, SD.  Her surviving grandchildren include: Alyssa, Jenni, Lexi, Christen, Jason, Eric, Dakota, Rebecca, Clade, and Dryeann; and two great-grandchildren: Alina and Henry.  Per Janis' wishes, there will be no funeral but a gravesite burial at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD on Friday, July 8 ^th , 2016 at 11:00am.  Memorials in her honor can be designated to: Canyon Lake Senior Center, 2900 Canyon Lake Drive, Rapid City, SD 57702.
