Obituary

Born to Roy & Alta Bradshaw (Harvey) and later to become Alta Sheriff. Jay grew up in the hills, ranching, hunting and fishing. He spent some summers working in Spearfish Canyon as a wrangler, and he also spent some time in Baker, Montana. His younger years were spent out at the Harvey Place where he could often be found to this day. He loved it out there, and had many fond and humorous memories of the Harvey family. In 1941 Jay left for Seattle. He worked at Associated Shipyards until June of 1943, when he tried to enlist in the Army. Being turned away because he was not 18, he traveled to San Francisco to live with his father and uncle who were out there also working in the shipyards. On August 30, 1943 Jay enlisted in the Navy. He was still under age, but the Chief let him slide. He served his country flying in B-24s over the Pacific. At the conclusion of the war he continued his service in the Pacific, until his squadron was decommissioned. He then was transferred to Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, Washington State. He met a gal, and her name was Dorothy Brown of Detroit Lakes Minnesota, he was still in the Navy at this time. He served until February of 1947. He and Dorothy got married July of that year. After wards they moved to Fargo, North Dakota to be close to her family. This is where he started learning to be a carpenter. He, Dorothy, and Roy born April 16, 1948 moved back to Seattle, where he continued his apprenticeship, and became a Journeyman. Jay was proud of his work, and helped many a young apprentice become journeyman carpenters. Jay retired in 1988, spent a lot of time hunting, traveling with his wife, and doing woodwork. His specialty later on became Diamond Willow canes. In 1991 they decided to move to the Black Hills. Where he lived out the remainder of his days. Spending time hunting, fishing, whittling diamond willows and of course out at the Harvey ranch. His most important achievement was the family that he helped to raise. He was a man amongst men, a loving husband, and a true father in every sense of the word. Jay is preceded in death by his mother, father, 2 brothers and sister. Jay is survived by his wife Dorothy, his two sons Roy, and Steven. A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
