IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jean Yvonne
Kok
May 4, 1954 – December 30, 2022
Jean Y. Kok (Hopkins) was born in Kadoka, SD, on May 4 th , 1954, to Russell "Pete" and Norma (Johnston) Hopkins. She was the 2 nd youngest of 4 children. Jean attended elementary and high school in Kadoka and some college at BHSU. She then moved back to Kadoka to work at the family grocery store, Hopkins Economy Mart. From the beginning Jean always had a very strong work ethic.
In 1974, Jean had her 1 st born son, Michael. They stayed in Kadoka where she continued working at the family grocery store and also at the Hic Hop. It was here that she met her future husband, Timothy Kok. On June 27 th , 1981, Tim and Jean were united in marriage in Kadoka at the Presbyterian Church. In this union were born 2 children, Jennifer, and Daniel.
That summer of 1981, Tim and Jean then moved to a ranch/farm 12 miles SW of Lodgepole, SD. For a town girl Jean picked up on the farm life very well and before you knew it, she was delivering lambs, driving tractors, gardening, cooking/canning, and still always had time to help her children study for school tests. The family also did custom harvesting in the summers and traveled all the way to Texas to harvest wheat many summers taking care of family and making sure all the hands were fed in the fields. Jean truly enjoyed the farm life and often spoke of how much she enjoyed her time there.
As life often does throw us curve balls a new adventure began during the summer of 1989. The family left the farm and moved to Whitewood, SD. Jean went to work for BHSS in 1990, working in their puppet factory outside of Sturgis, eventually becoming the supervisor. Unfortunately, in 2006, they were sold to Disney and the factory was shut down and jobs moved to China.
Once again Jean, always the type of person with a strong work ethic, landed a position with Premier Bankcard in Spearfish in 2006, where she worked until they shut down in 2011 it was at this time Jean decided to retire and enjoy her grandkids. Jean loved to play cards with her friends and family, loved to read, loved watching detective and crime shows, loved to bake, and always loved a good party.
Grateful for having shared her life is her husband, Timothy Kok of Sturgis; two sons, Michael of Spearfish, SD, and Daniel (Kirsten) Kok, Elmendorf AFB, AK; daughter, Jennifer (John) Bush, Sturgis, SD; six grandchildren; a brother, Robert "Bob" (Sara) Hopkins, Pahrump, NV; a sister, Carolyn Trottier of Niagara, WI; and a host of many other relatives and friends.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Norma Hopkins, and her brother, James "Jim" Hopkins.
