Obituary

Jeanette Claire (Shostrom) Thacker was born in Deadwood, SD, on July 10, 1932, to A.H "Lex" & Stelline (Van Heuvelen) Shostrom. She attended Deadwood schools and graduated from Deadwood High School in 1950. While in school she enjoyed tap dancing, tumbling and other sports. She was honored Queen of Bethel #4, Job's Daughters, in 1950.

She married Fred Thacker in October 1950. From this union, three children were born: "Tass" Kathleen, Bruce, and "Beaner" Jean. Jeanette was very involved in her children's activities including frequent competitions with the Deadwood Swim Club and the Terry Peak Ski Racing teams. She kept detailed picture albums and scrapbooks for each of her children, and made all of their Halloween costumes along with many of their clothes by hand. Jeanette and Fred separated and divorced in the early 1970's.

Jeanette worked for Black Hills Abstract for several years. In the mid-1970's she opened her own shop, "What's Her Names," where she designed her own hand-sewn "Made by Jet" fashions, along with many other things.

Jeanette worked as a telephone operator and in other office departments for Homestake Mining Company from 1977 to 1993, when she happily retired to spend her days doing art and craft projects in her home.

She loved to make unique miniature displays including a large and well-stocked General Store, a Soda Fountain in an old cookie tin and a Laundry Room inside a Tide detergent container. Her Mouse House contained nine cleverly and intricately decorated miniature rooms.

She made a miniature replica of her daughter Tass' office, complete with world souvenirs, camera, slide photos, skis, mini-cactus, a black cat, and a bulletin board of her photos with note saying "call mom." Her daughter Beaner's miniature room includes skis, snowboards, a pool table and darts, a St. Bernard on a rug in front of the fireplace, plants in pink pots, and tiny pictures of her grandkids. Her son Bruce's miniature room garage features an immaculate work bench with shiny tools, dog, a mounted deer head, chainsaws, racing motorcycles and snowmobiles.

Jeanette loved to read, watch old movies, Saturday Night Live, and the Oscars. She enjoyed travel and collecting antiques. She collected hundreds of dolls. About twenty of them were called "the girls" and she changed their clothes with every season and holiday and created little tableaus of their activities. She made her own very creative greeting cards using photos of her dolls having fun together.

Jeanette had a keen eye for fashion and was always stylishly dressed. She was in her 50's when she got her first Vogue subscription.

She was the first person in the family to start skiing. She then taught all three of her children to ski. The family spent most weekends camping and water skiing at Pactola Lake. She had a great sense of humor.

She loved dogs, especially her American Samoyed, Casper, and her Shitzu, Hairy Barker.

Jeanette belonged to Beta Sigma Phi, Historic Deadwood-Lead Arts Council, Northern Hills Doll Club, and the Lawrence County Historical Society. She volunteered at the Adam's Memorial Museum and helped work on displays.

The most important thing to her was spending time with her family. She was an amazing mother and was also loved by many of her children's friends. She will be greatly missed. She died after a short, rapid descent into Alzheimer's on February 6, 2017.

She is survived by her daughter, Tass Thacker (Bruce B. Junek) of Rapid City; son, Bruce Thacker (Tracy) of Lead; and daughter, Beaner Thacker (Rock Reman) of Whitewood; grandchildren, Guy Reman (Beth), Karl Thacker (Rhonda Anderson), and Suzanne Hays (Kyle); great-grandchildren, Tristyn, Taytum, Dylan, Carson, Madi, Niveah, Benton, Jersey, and Hailey; her brother, Keith Shostrom (Joyce); and nephews, John Shostrom and Mark Shostrom.

The family would like to express deep gratitude to the staff at Golden Ridge assisted living, and the amazing nurses at Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital for treating her with such compassion and dignity. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Thom Groeger.

A celebration of her life will be held in the spring. Jeanette will be buried at Mt. Moriah in Deadwood.

A memorial in her name may be made to the Black Hills Children's Center in Rockerville.
