DENBY - Jerauld Edward "Jerry" Weaver, 75, of rural Denby, South Dakota, died Friday December 28, 2007 at the Fort. Meade VA Black Hills Health Care Center.
Visitation will be 8 a.m. to time of services on Wednesday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 2, 2008, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at the Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard.
A memorial has been established to benefit the volunteers at Ft. Meade.
Jerry was born January 10, 1932, in Washabaugh County, South Dakota, to Richard H. and Nellie H. (Carpenter) Weaver. He attended school near Long Valley, South Dakota. After completing his education he worked for the Bart Bale and Henry Brinkley ranches near Hermosa until joining the Marine Corps. He served his country honorably overseas in Korea and was honorably discharged on June 17, 1952. He returned home where he rodeoed and hauled rodeo stock for the Hoover Rodeo Company out of Harrison, Nebraska. Jerry married Marilyn Hanson in 1956. The couple had three children and ranched for several years. Jerry attended Farrier school in 1969 and was a well known horse shoer for many years around Western South Dakota.
In 1974 he married Bernadine LaBeau.
Jerry trained and raced horses in South Dakota, Montana, Nebraska and New Mexico. He retired from training and operated a boot repair shop in Gordon until 1994. After retiring he enjoyed tinkering in his shop near Denby. Jerry was hospitalized in Hot Springs and moved to Fort Meade in May of 2007.
Survivors include his son Bart (Carol) Weaver, and daughter, Debbie (Link) Thompson, or Gordon, Nebraksa; daughter Shelley (Ron) Shepherd of Lake Andes, South Dakota; brothers, Everett (Edna) Weaver, Bill (Ida) Weaver, Edwin (Omal) Weaver, all of Rapid City; one sister Helen Good, Kadoka; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Bernadine, one brother, Wayne and one infant brother, Lawrence.
