Obituary

Jerry was born on Sept 29, 1943 to Lois Symonds Marx and Sylvester (John) Marx. When Jerry was a young child the family lived in a variety of places including Faith, Sturgis, Belle Fourche, and Sulphur. When he was about 9 years old Lois married Leo (Gailen) McDaniel. The family moved to Lantry, SD. Jerry spent most of the following years in the Lantry/Dupree area.

He attended school in Royal Center, Sturgis, Lantry, Eagle Butte and Dupree. A couple of years after leaving Dupree High, Jerry joined the United States Air Force where he obtained his GED.

Jerry joined the United States Air Force in 1965. He received the rank of Sergeant (Tech 4) before being honorable discharged on May 1, 1967. One of the more memorable places was near the Arctic Circle where he was able to enjoy panning for gold and experience amazing wild life, such as polar bears during his spare time. While in the Air Force he was trained as special tech diesel mechanic serving at Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado Springs, Mountain Home Base, Boise, Idaho and Anchorage Alaska. Jerry was proud of his service to his country and was a member of the American Legion for many years, serving as commander for the Dupree American Legion.

On May 29, 1970 Jerry married Cheryl Taylor. Jerry and Cheryl were foster parents for a number of years. Even after they went their separate ways Jerry continued to keep in contact with some of his foster children and helped them whenever he could.

Jerry had a variety of careers working for many companies including Lantry Garage and Phillips 66, and Dan's Super Market. His main career was as a county assessor in Ziebach and Fall River counties. After retirement Jerry moved to the Dupree Manor and begin working for Dale Lesmeister at Dale's Sinclair in Eagle Butte. He enjoyed visiting with the customers.

In 2010, his apartment building in Dupree was destroyed by a tornado. At this time he moved to an apartment in Faith. This was his home the rest of his life.

Jerry loved family, fishing, camping and playing cards. After moving to Faith he still found time for these hobbies, traveling to Lantry regularly to play cards with family. He had a scooter he drove to Durkee Lake fishing. He also developed a new hobby - enjoying the birds he could see at Durkee Lake and out his apartment window. Playing cards with family remained his main joy. He made the 32 mile trip (one way) to Lantry weekly, sometimes more, to play cards. Even in his final days he summoned the strength to play cards - and he won.

Jerry died on January 28, 2016, in hospice, at the Ft. Meade Medical Center with family present, after fighting a valiant battle with cancer. And we think Jerry could hear mom calling him home with the smell of his favorite meal of meat pie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lois and Gailen McDaniel, John Marx, his older brother Gene Talley, younger brother Jim Marx and nephew James R Webb, Jr. Very special Grandparents and several aunts and uncles . They probably have a game of cards going right now!

He is survived by his brother Frank McDaniel, and sisters Judy (John D) Lemke, Jo Ann (James R) Webb, Cindy McDaniel, Mona (Kevin) Rabern and a sister-in-law Jessie (Charlie) Russell. His aunts Wanda Hogan, Ilene Symonds, Ardith Holmes, Hope (Clinton) Septka and a very special uncle Don ( LaVonne) Symonds. He also left behind 12 nieces and nephews and a still growing group of great nieces and nephews.
