Obituary

Jerry Lee Walker, 79, passed away on April 12, 2026, at his home in Gillette, WY, surrounded by his family, following a lengthy battle with PSP.

Jerry was born on August 26, 1946, in Spearfish, SD to Austin and Edith (Fletcher) Walker. Jerry was raised on the family ranch near Alzada, MT, where he attended country school as a child and graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 1964. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany until 1967. Following his time in the service, he moved to Denver, CO, where he married Cheryl Steinbach on April 6, 1968. Once married, they relocated to Anchorage, AK, where Jerry worked on the North Slope. Their first daughter, Tracy, was born there in 1968. After two years in Alaska, they moved back to Belle Fourche, SD, where their second daughter, Tami, was born in 1970. In 1976, Jerry and Cheryl moved to Newcastle, WY, where they would raise their family in the house that Jerry built with the help of many friends and family. Jerry was hired at Jacobs Ranch Coal Mine, where he worked as a shovel mechanic until his retirement in 2004. In 2013, Jerry and Cheryl moved to Gillette, WY to be closer to family.

Jerry enjoyed fishing, camping, and spending time with family at his cabin in the Black Hills that he built in the early 2000’s. He spent his time there riding four-wheelers and catching trout from the pond he stocked yearly. Jerry loved his bass fishing tournaments and was a member of the Bass Bandits of Rapid City, SD. He loved waterskiing and taught his daughters and friends to ski. One of his favorite things was his annual fishing trip to the Missouri River with his brother. Jerry was a NASCAR fan and spent every Sunday watching the races even until the end. Jerry loved spending time with his grandkids and going to all their events. His passion for wrestling took him to many of his grandson’s tournaments, where he earned the “Greatest Fan” award at WAWA state wrestling. Jerry lit up every time one of his grandkids or great grandkids came to visit him. His love for them was unconditional.

Surviving family members include his loving wife of 58 years, Cheryl; daughters, Tracy (Bill) Olson and Tami (Joe) Baird; grandchildren, Tyler Olson, Tanner (Taylor) Olson, Brooklyn (Nick) Eggert, Trent (Benyapa) Olson, and Branson Cowles; great grandchildren, Kinsey, Tatum, Taegan, Hunter, Evelynne, Macy and Milana; brothers, Marvin (Rose) Walker and Robert (Marina) Walker; numerous nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Sheila; and his in-laws, Ruben and Evelyn Steinbach.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 2, 2026, in the Community Room of Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, 804 S. Emerson Ave., Gillette, WY at 2:00 p.m.
