Joan M. Seymour, 75, of Sturgis, died Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Sturgis Church of Christ with Pastor Josh Floyd officiating. The burial following at Bear Butte Cemetery.

Joan was born November 24, 1935 in Faith, SD to Harry and Dorothy (Schetnan) Fairbanks. She lived near Maurine until the age of 4 then moved to rural Ziebach County and attended school at Dupree, Red Elm school and Lone Tree school. Her freshman year in school she moved to Dupree and lived there until her marriage on September 25, 1955 to Jack Seymour. Joan and Jack worked on ranches in northwestern South Dakota until the late 60s when they moved to Spearfish for Jack to attend Black Hill State University. They lived in Whitewood for a year before moving to Sturgis. In 1986 they purchased a ranch north of Sturgis and worked and resided there until 2009 when they retired and bought a house in Sturgis. Joan enjoyed sewing, gardening and caring for her pets.

Joan is survived by her husband Jack of Stugis; one son, John Seymour of Sturgis; one daughter Kathy Seymour of Sturgis; two brothers, Donald (Sally) Fairbanks of Rapid City and Kenneth (Carol) Fairbanks of Sturgis; one sister, Joyce (Bud) Stapert of Austin, AR; and two grandchildren, Derek and Amy.

She was preceded in death by both parents, and one brother Harry Lewis Fairbanks.
