Joanne Yvonne (Aske) Erickson was born June 1, 1939, to Edwin and Marjorie (Orr) Aske. Having lost her mother at a very young age, her father, Edwin, married Beulah Farris. Beulah raised Joanne as her own along with her 3 brothers, Dwayne, Robert, and James. She was raised on her parent's ranch and attended school in Jones County until the 8th grade.
Joanne married Frank Vaughn in 1954, to which 6 children were born: Carol, Karen, Flo, Fran, Frankie, and Billy. Joanne took great pride in being a mother and a homemaker, and later in being a grandmother and great-grandmother.
In 1969, she married the love of her life, Albert Erickson. Albert worked as a construction superintendent, so he moved around the state, and Joanne followed him around to different towns and worked at various jobs.
Joanne was a very accomplished bowler, and truly enjoyed the time she spent at the bowling alleys with her teammates and friends. Joanne and Al finally settled in Pierre, SD, in 1983, where Joanne went to work at K-Mart and she retired from there in 2004 after 17 years. She enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren in all of their activities. In later years, she enjoyed reading, word finds, and coloring. Joanne always enjoyed family get-togethers. Having family around was always important to her.
Joanne, 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 6, 2019, at her home in Newell, SD, where she resided with her daughter and son-in-law for the last 2 years, with her loved ones by her side.
Joanne is survived by her children, Carol Vaughn of Muskogee, OK, Karen Vaughn (fiancé, James Clark) of Wheatland, WY, Flo Hapney of Fort Pierre, SD. Fran (Allen) Stirling of Newell, SD, Frankie (Shonda) Vaughn of Sioux Falls, SD, and Billy Vaughn of Yankton, SD; brother, Robert (Leann) Aske of Phoenix, AZ; sister-in-law, Ellen Erickson of Veblen, SD; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; her father and mothers; 2 brothers, Dwayne and James; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Aske; a brother-in-law, Ed Erickson; and honorary friend, Larry Mathews.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., with a visitation one hour prior, on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor David Baer officiating. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
