John Harlan Berghorst was born in Chandler, MN on a dairy farm to Dorothy and Samuel Berghorst, the oldest of five kids. He married Linda Mann of Luverne, MN and they raised two children, Cindy (Doug) Feustel of Randall, MN, and Jim (Toni) Berghorst of Sturgis, SD. The family lived in various parts of the Twin Cities, where John was a welder. After a back injury, he became an engineer for a millwork company, and then later worked as a ranch foreman and a trucker. He and Linda later divorced.
John was proud to have been a cowboy. He greatly enjoyed doing anything outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He adored listening to music and watching 'Lonesome Dove' and 'Life Below Zero'!
He had 5 grandchildren, Emily Feustel of Brainerd, MN, Joel Feustel, Katie (JD) Johannsen of Sioux Falls, SD, Andrew Berghorst and Jacob Berghorst of Sturgis, SD; and 1 great-grandson, Rayne.
John had many friends in his life, to include his best friends, Danny, Jay, and his dog, Sweetie - all of whom he considered family.
John Berghorst, 73, of Sturgis, formerly of Randall, MN, died Monday, March 1, 2021. He fought hard against pancreatic, liver, and lung cancer, but lost his fight about a month and a half after diagnosis.
He is survived by his son; his grandkids; his sisters, Diana (Dave) Linnemeyer and Patty (Merle) Berhens; and his brother, Sam (Barb) Berghorst.
John was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mina; his daughter, Cindy; and grandson, Joel.
A celebration of John's life will be held on June 5 and June 6, 2021 in Luverne, MN during Luverne's Buffalo Days.
