Obituary

John Ollie Broderson, 74, of Newell, SD, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2026, at the VA Hospice in Sturgis SD.

John was born August 31, 1952, in Rapid City, SD, to John and Matilda Broderson.

He graduated from Stevens High School in Rapid City and went on to serve in the United States Navy. After his time in the Navy, John worked as a motorcycle mechanic. He married Judy (Smith) of Rapid City in 1980.

John lived life fast and was constantly on the go. He was always tinkering with something, finding ways to make things work the way he wanted them to. He had a knack for modifying things- including his tools- which sometimes made them a little difficult for anyone else to use.

John was a jokester and had a great gift for talking, which, as his family would remember occasionally got him into trouble. He had his own way of doing things and wasn't afraid to figure things out for himself.

He also had an almost unmatched love for cookies. It didn't matter what kind they were- if they were cookies John could gobble them down. His family will always remember just how much that man loved his cookies.

John always did the best he could with what he had. Life wasn't always easy, but he never stopped trying to be the best version of himself, even when it was hard. That determination was a part of who he was, and something his family will carry with them.

John is survived by his wife Judy; his daughters, Kelsey Broderson of Newell, SD, and Katie Broderson (Ty Chiller) of Sturgis, SD, and his granddaughter Aaliyah Chiller of Sturgis, SD.

A service for John will be held at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD, on October 9th, 2026, at 3:00 PM.

Family is planning a celebration of life, and the time for that will be announced on a later date.
