Obituary

John A. Magenheimer, 96, Sturgis, died Thursday, May 8, 2014, at the Golden Living Center -Black Hills in Rapid City.

Visitation will be from noon until time of services at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis on Tuesday.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor John Tesnow officiating. Burial follows at the Bear Butte Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the Meade County Senior Center.

John was born July 1, 1917 at Deadwood, SD, to George and Bertha (Mader) Magenheimer. He was raised on the family homestead and went to a rural Meade County School. He also boarded in Deadwood while attending school there. Following his education he returned to the family ranch.

On June 25, 1952, he married Mae Busse at Belle Fourche, SD. They lived on the ranch until 1969 when they moved to Sturgis. They continued to summer at the ranch and spend their winters in town. Following Mae's death in 1987, John spent his time doing upkeep and repairs for friends and neighbors. John always had to be busy fixing things and helping people.

John married Daisy Sager Gardner on April 22, 1992 at Sturgis. They spent many hours together volunteering time at the Senior Center, the Thrift Store and hosting tourists at Bear Butte for the Game Fish and Parks Department. They enjoyed selling fruit at towns around the Black Hills. They were members of First Christian Church in Sturgis. John and Daisy moved to assisted living in Rapid City in 2008. After Daisy's death in 2011, John moved to the nursing home.

Survivors include his sister, Elsie Tarrant, Sturgis; Nieces Joy Porter, Judy Smith and Peggy Hall; step children Don Gardner, Fairburn, Virginia Utter, Rapid City, and their families. John was preceded in death by his sister, Ella Getty.
