John W. Schmidt, 95, Sturgis, died Monday, October, 31, 2011 at the Sturgis Regional Hospital.

Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 7, 2011 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Pastor Willard Olsen officiating. Burial follows at the Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.

A memorial has been established.

John was born on the family homestead near Marcus, SD, on August 5, 1916 to Joseph and Jennie (Howie) Schmidt. He attended the Howie school and graduate from Faith High School. John herded sheep for awhile before heading to Buffalo, SD, where he worked on a cattle ranch.

John married Corinne Ellefson at Sturgis on January 20, 1940. They left for Ennis, MT in the Spring where John worked on the Jumping Horse ranch training horses. They returned to the Marcus area where John bought the family ranch. He retired in 1997 and moved to town.

John enjoyed the game of golf and flyfishing. He liked good (white face) cattle and good horses. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Faith and Sturgis and a member of the Golden K Kiwanis club in Sturgis.

Survivors include his daughter Sharon (Vernon) Ross, Sturgis; grand daughter Corinne (Steve) Johnson, Kingston, WA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son Jerry, four sisters, one brother and one grand daughter.
