John J. Weiers, 87, Sturgis, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, July 27, 2011.

John was born August 19, 1923, in Sturgis to Peter and Henrietta (Richards) Weiers. He grew up in Sturgis and later lived in the Tilford area where the family built a one room cabin during the summer months and finished it prior to winter. After his father died, John went to work at various farms and ranches in the area to help support the family. He then joined the Civilian Conservation Corp and worked on the Sheridan Lake Project for 2 years. After the project was finished, he went to work for Homestake Mining Company where he worked for 40 years.

John was united in marriage to Virginia Baker on February 13, 1946. She preceded him in death on November 28, 1972. On August 19, 1974, he was united in marriage to Sonya Hartl. She preceded him in death on September 13, 1988.

John was a member of the Lead Elks Club, the Lead Moose Club, and the United Steelworkers of America. He was also a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead.

John will always be remembered for his gentle nature and love of a good story. He treasured time with his family and loved to hunt, fish, and do woodworking.

Survivors include his children, Tom (Deborah) Weiers, Rigby, ID, Tim (Kim) Weiers, Littleton, CO, Joanie (Kerry) Downs, Fairview, TX, Sheila Weiers, Palm Springs, CA, Judy Weiers, Palm Springs, CA, and Brigette (Brad) Nelson, Sturgis; stepchildren, Scott Hartl, Mark (Sharon) Hartl, and Larry Hartl, all of Spearfish, Monte (Amy) Hartl, Rapid City, and Shelley Donolan, Sturgis; seventeen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by Virginia and Sonya; one son, Gary; six brothers; and five sisters.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 30, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Father Arnold Kari officiating.

A memorial has been established to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis.
