Obituary

Johnnie Patrick Rindy, 73, of Sturgis South Dakota, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at the Black Hills VA Healthcare-Ft Meade SD, with his daughters and 2 of his dearest friends, by his side.

Johnnie was born in Hot Springs SD, on May 6, 1948, to John and Naida (Parsons) Rindy.

He was raised in Sturgis and attended Sturgis Brown High School.  He volunteered for the Navy at the height of the Vietnam War, and served from 6/12/67 through 3/8/71.  He was a River Transit Coordinator which put him in charge of a 7-person Naval Crew that manned the PBR (Patrol Boat River) as the Brown Water Navy.  The men of the US Navy's brown water force played a vital, but often overlooked role in the Vietnam War.  Known for their black berets and limitless courage, they maneuvered their aging, makeshift craft along shallow coastal waters and twisting inland waterways to search out the enemy.  He was stationed along the Vietnam Cambodia border and part of his job was to coordinate all of the river boats.  He received a Purple Heart during his service.  He was exposed to Agent Orange, which caused the cancer that eventually led to his death.

John's passion was classic cars, and he restored many of them for friends and customers throughout his life.  He created Adler Industries in Redmond, Washington, which specialized in creating and customizing Kit Cars.  He then moved his shop to Whitewood, South Dakota.  He had loyal, repeat customers that highly trusted the quality work that he provided. He received multiple awards for his meticulous craftsmanship in the cars that he restored.  John designed and built a high-end sports car from the ground up, called the Ferret.  He built several Ferrets, and dreamed of one day, manufacturing them.

John leaves behind 2 daughters, Renee Rindy and Robin Denniston (Tim).  One grandson, Elijah Middleton.  One brother, Duane Mike Rindy (Babe Simon).

John is proceeded in death by his parents and his sister Kathleen Susan Rindy.
