Obituary

Deadwood - Johnny "JJ" Joseph Patino 78 of Deadwood, died Sunday, August 19, 2012 at the Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center - Ft. Meade. He was born October 20, 1933 in Lead, SD to Frank and Josephine Patino. After graduation from Edgemont HS in Edgemont, SD in 1953, John enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Paratrooper and Drill Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1956 and was a Korean War veteran. He returned home to South Dakota after his military service and met Charleen Olson. They were married and raised three children, Michael, Mark, and Rachelle. John was a successful businessman, owned Whitewood Custom Treater's in Whitewood SD and Lenard's Place in Sturgis SD. John served as a policeman, fireman, and city councilman for Deadwood, SD. John was also a lifelong card player. He was a blackjack dealer in Las Vegas and had become a common presence at the poker tables in Deadwood through the years. Family was very important to John and he always made time to visit relatives both near and far. He dearly loved all his relatives. John passed away in the hospice wing of the Ft Meade VA hospital. He was not alone at his time death as his family took turns being with him for the seven weeks he was there. John is survived by his three children, Michael (Lori) Patino, Mark (Chopper) Patino, Rachelle (Eric) Patino-Heinecke; his granddaughter, Frederica (Freddie) Frisco; step mother, Helen Patino-Duran; step sister, Oralia McKee-Duran; three step brothers, Eustolio, Manual and John Duran; one half-sister, Rosellia Blakeman-Patino and three half-brothers, Carlos, Froilan, and Efrian Patino. A very special thank you to Mark and Melodee (Antuna) Ulmer, Marvin and Meagan Ulmer, and Donna Antuna for their love and care they have given our father. He was preceded in death by, his parents, Frank and Josephine (Garcia) Patino;six brothers, Richard, Jerry, Pete, Frank, Rudy, Joseph Patino; two sister, Mary Antuna, Francis Patino; one half sister Lucille Smith and one half brother Robert. Graveside services will be held 12:30 Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with Rev. Bill Zandri officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard. The family would like to invite Johnny's friends and family to join them for lunch and fellowship at 2:00 p.m. at the VFW, 10 Pine Street in Deadwood. A memorial has been established.
