Joseph E. Schumacher, 56, Sturgis, died Wednesday, March 14, 2007, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care Center.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2007, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Arnold Kari officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Joe was born Oct. 13, 1950, in Mobridge, to Edward and Elsie Schumacher. He lived with his parents in Timber Lake until the age of nine and then moved with his mother to Amorbach, Germany. After one year, he returned to the United States and attended high school in Highmore and Rapid City.
In 1969, he joined the U.S. Navy and spent nine and one-half years on nuclear submarine duty all over the world. After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Rapid City and worked in several different jobs and he attended South Dakota School of Mines & Technology for four years. From 1994 until 2002, he worked at Fort Meade as a computer specialist. From 2002 until his death, he lived in Sturgis in a nursing home.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward S. Schumacher, in 1989.
