Obituary

Joyce Josephine (Goetzelmann) Medley was born in Chicago, IL, on March 19, 1933. After graduating from high school, she married George Medley and they embarked on a life in the US Air Force. Their last posting was to Ellsworth AFB, where she and George fell in love with the Black Hills. They decided Rapid City would be the ideal place to raise their large brood of children.

Home and hearth were very important to Joyce, and she dedicated her life to raising her eight kids to be good people. She had a terrific sense of humor, and suppertime around the large kitchen table was always filled with laughter, and unfortunately, sometimes spinach. Her mother had taught her how to play penny-ante poker, and she made sure this knowledge was passed on to her kids. Her favorite pastime, however--and the one she excelled at the most--was worrying about her children, even after they had grown and left the nest. Her greatest reward for raising 8 children were all the grandchildren who were absolutely the most special part of her life, and always brightened her day.

Joyce, 83, of Sturgis, SD, died at the Lippold Hospice Suite at Sturgis Regional Hospital on July 4, 2016. In her final moments, she was surrounded by family when God called her home.

Joyce is survived by children, Michael (Gina), Terry (Song Mi), Gayle (Tom Ogle), Kathy (Andy) Simonson, Patrick (Lori Snellgrove), James (Lisa Glenn), Susan (Brian Mettler), and Diana (Jack) Henris; twelve grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Joyce was predeceased by George, her husband of 62 years.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the people of Sturgis Regional Hospital-most especially the Massa-Berry Nursing Home and Hospital staffs. Their care, kindness, and compassion has been a blessing during this difficult time.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel on Thursday, July 7. A rosary will be said Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.

Mass of Christian burial for Joyce will be at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Sturgis at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 8, 2016, with Father Timothy Castor officiating. She will be laid to rest at Black Hills National Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
