Joyce Lena
Sailer
Mar 11, 1933 — Mar 24, 2025
Rapid City
Joyce was born on March 11th, 1933, in Peever, South Dakota, to Byron E. "Barney" and Lillian Beatrice (Wickard) Canfield. She grew up during the Great Depression with seven siblings on the family farm.
After graduating from high school, Joyce moved out on her own and worked at a variety of jobs that included caregiving and factory work.
Joyce was introduced to her husband, Shorty, of 70-plus years by her Uncle Red, (who was Shorty's boss on a construction site). After just three weeks of courtship, Shorty and Joyce were married in Peever on December 30th, 1954. Three children were born to this marriage.
Joyce loved being a homemaker. Cooking for family and friends was one of her greatest joys. She made everything from scratch. Homemade bread was always on the menu. She also loved planting and tending flower and vegetable gardens. Joyce enjoyed traveling with family, including outings to Deadwood. She was a faithful member of Atonement Lutheran Church for more than five decades. She was so proud to watch her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren participate in musical programs and sporting events.
Joyce had a passion for collecting Salt and Pepper shakers, antique hymnals, Country Music CDs and decks of playing cards.
Joyce is loved by so many family and friends for her strength, her kindness and charitable attitude. She strived to see the "best" in everyone she met.
Joyce is survived by two brothers, Dale Canfield and Lauren (Delores) Canfield, one sister-in-law and cousin, Shari (Wickard) Sailer, her children, Sandra Feickert, Shari Pappert, and George Sailer; grandchildren: Ryan Feickert, Rick Pappert (Katie), Traci Sailer, Kyla Feickert, Corey Feickert (Amanda), Ceclie Sailer (Eric Bear), and Elizabeth Hardman (Mark Odle); great-grandchildren: Jazmynn Allen (Joe War Bonnett), Amarion Sailer, Junior Allen, Luke Pappert, Adalind Feickert, Avery Feickert, Mackenna Pappert, Coralee Feickert and Landen Green; Great-great-grandsons: Kassian and KaVaughn Allen.
