Judith Anne Bauer, born and raised in Deadwood, S.D., was the fifth-born of the eight children of Paul and Mary Jane Hudson. She also lived in New Mexico, Atlanta, Titusville, Fla., and the Phoenix area.
Although Judy lived much of her life in the Black Hills, she was drawn to the Southwest, where she lived for a while with an older sister and loved to ride horses. As a young, single mother, Judy worked as a waitress and a bartender at the Buffalo, Bodega and other bars for several years in Deadwood. She also worked at F.L. Thorpe and Co. in Deadwood and the Alco store in Lead.
Although Judy didn't finish high school, she was determined to complete her GED. She received her certificate the same year her oldest child graduated from high school.
Throughout her life, Judy enjoyed music, going to movies, walking in the outdoors and being around animals.
She died Monday, December 7, 2015 at the Sturgis Regional Senior Care center after a lengthy illness. She was 76. She was born March 8, 1939.
Survivors include her children, Earl Scarry of Deadwood; Judith Kohler of Denver, Colo.; and Eric Bauer of the Minneapolis area. Other survivors are three brothers, Adam Hudson of Spearfish, Bob Hudson of San Manuel, Ariz., and Danny Hudson of Port Orchard, Wash.; a sister, Dorothy Bream of Sioux Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Mary Jane (Cope) Hudson; two sisters, Carolyn Green and Mary Beth Elder; and a brother, Bill Hudson.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
