Obituary

On Wednesday, June 30, 2021, Judy Kay Butler of Newell, SD, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home surrounded by family, at the age of 64.

Judy was born August 1, 1956, in Rapid City, SD, to Dwyane and Geraldine Butler. Dwyane was in the Air Force, which led to them living in Northern Minnesota. This is where she met and married, Lyle Nelson. From this union they had two children, Christine and John. Years later, in 1992, they moved back to South Dakota, to a small town called Newell. There she bought the Blue Line Diner, which was the start to illustrious career. It was there she showed her compassion for God and the community. She changed many lives with her authentically kind touch and words. To further show her love, she hosted free Thanksgiving dinners, and went as far as to deliver meals to the ones unable to go themselves. After the Blue Line Diner, she continued to show her love as a caregiver for many years. When not at work, Judy would be found working in her flower gardens, or visiting with her family members, both of which were her pride and joy. Judy had an irresistible loving sense of humor that was easily recognized in a room. Her quirkiness was bound to get a few laughs… some of which were accompanied with a playful eye-roll. Through life, Judy made many great memories and touched on so many lives. Some of her ashes will be spread with her father and sister in Williams, MN, and also at her favorite place, and forever home, Strawberry Lake, MN. Here her memory will live on in her family's hearts.

She is survived by her husband, Arlen Wanless, with whom she spent her last wonderful years with; mother, Geraldine Anderson; step-mother, Judy Butler; sisters, Sandi Demary, and Linda Johnson; children, Christine Nestegard, and John (Cassie) Nelson; grandchildren, Nels and Nissa Nestegard, Tyler, Dillon, Kaleigh, Braidy, Rylee, and Averi Nelson; great-grandchild, Lyla Nelson.

Judy is proceeded in death by her sister, Janet Butler; and father, Dwayne Butler.

The family will be hosting a celebration of life at the Blue Line Diner on Sunday, July 18, 2021, from 2-4 p.m.

Cards and flowers may be sent to PO Box 711, Newell, SD 57760.
