Obituary

June Elizabeth was born August 8, 1914, in Minneapolis, MN, and died in Rapid City, SD, August 5, 2019, just three days short of her 105th birthday.

She grew up in southwest Minneapolis and lived most of her life in the Linden Hills and adjacent Edina area. June was the oldest and last surviving of the five children of Adeline Viola (Remick) and Roland Arthur Whitten. She told many tales of her dealings with her four younger siblings (Joye, Robert, Patricia, and Theodore).

June was married on September 19, 1941, to Sterling B. Garrison, another Linden Hills resident. They have three children, James (Julie), Margaret(Rob McIntire), and Julia (Marty Byrnes), one grandchild, Daniel McIntire (Melanie), and 4 great-grandchildren, Madilyn, Amaia, Sterling and Theodore McIntire.

June and Sterling had barely started out in their life together when WWII broke out and Sterling was sent to the Pacific in the Navy. After the war, they enjoyed a pleasant life, mostly spent in the Linden Hills/Edina area. A job assignment sent the family to the Philippines to live and gave them the opportunity to travel around the world. Later, June and Sterling traveled to much of the US and various countries. Both were longtime and active members of Lake Harriet United Methodist Church where they were married.

When June became a widow in 1981, she forged ahead on her own, traveling much of the world, continuing with church work, participating in PEO, Linden Hills Study Club, and other organizations. She even drove for Meals on Wheels when she was older than the recipients of those meals.

She was an accomplished seamstress, stitched beautiful crewel embroidery pieces, and read endlessly. She was very artistic, gardened, and even won prizes for her beautiful flower arrangements. June enjoyed remarkable health and had numerous wonderful friends. She never missed a birthday or Christmas with her grandson.

June lived on her own in her beloved condo until she was almost 102. Health problems then necessitated a move to Rapid City to live with family. Her 105 years were rich with talent, experience, service, and love.
