IN LOVING MEMORY OF
June Ann
Overland
January 2, 1943 – January 8, 2022
June Ann (Hackworth) Overland was born January 2, 1943, in Pierre, South Dakota, to George & Olive Hackworth. Growing up June lived in the Alpena, Oneida, Wessington Springs and Sturgis areas. Eventually graduating with honors from Sturgis High School in 1961.
June then attended Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD. After college she spent a year teaching at the Bonita Springs school. June held other various jobs over the years including working at Phil Town as a waitress when she was young, telephone operator at Northern State College while going to school, SCI, and Union Center Postmaster to name a few.
June was united in marriage to Wayne Ellis Overland on August 24th, 1965, in Deadwood, SD, and to this union two daughters, Toni (Overland) Vance and Karla (Overland) Janssen were born. June raised her daughters to be strong willed independent thinkers and at times possibly questioned this decision!
In the late 70's Wayne & June purchased the Union Center Store which they operated for over 20 years. In 2011 June suffered a stroke which left her with limited mobility. With Wayne's help June never let her disability limit her ability to live independently.
June will be remembered for her beautiful crochet work, her great cooking, her love of reading, and her sharp card playing ability. When playing cards June always picked her partner, you did not pick her! For years June and Kay Overland made a career out of schooling Wayne and Jack Overland at Whist. She spent many a Holiday and family gathering around a card table playing Whist, Pinochle, Pitch, or some other game late into the night. In recent years June spent many hours around Carl & Judy Peterson's table playing Five Crowns with family and friends. June was always up for a trip to Deadwood and especially enjoyed her trips with her sisters. June also enjoyed her many fishing trips with Wayne, especially those to the river to catch walleye.
June also took great pride in all of her grandchildren and made a point of going to as many of their activities as she could whether it was soccer, volleyball, softball or basketball. Grandma took particular pleasure in a Super Nacho and a Coke from the concession stand. It pleased her that of the seven grandkids five had already graduated from college and the remaining two will.
June is survived by her husband of 56 years, Wayne Overland, Union Center; two daughters, Toni (Scott) Vance, Faith, SD; Karla (Mike) Janssen, Rapid City, SD; grandchildren, Drew Vance, Madison (fiance Jacob Bennett) Vance, Brock Vance, Allix Vance, Olivia Janssen, Carter Janssen, and Sophia Janssen; sisters, Lorraine Barden, Mary (Leroy) Hix, Judy (Carl) Peterson, Debbie (Marty) Hanson, Bonnie (James) Tallmon, Georgia (Harlan) Moos, Teresa (Brian) Littleton; brother-in-law, Rob Smith, and numerous nieces and nephews.
June was preceded in death by her parents George & Laura Hackworth, and Olive Baldwin, sisters Ada Shanholtzer, and Kay Smith.
