Kathleen Shirley Miller, 82, of Spearfish, and formerly of Sturgis, died on June 30, 2013, at Spearfish Regional Hospital.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 4, 2013, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, with a wake starting at 7:00pm. A Mass of Cristian Burial will be held at 10:30am on Friday, July 5, 2013, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

She was born on July 28, 1930, in Rockham, SD to Alvin & Marie (Worman) Buss. She grew up on her family's farm in the Rockham area and graduated from Redfield High School in 1948, where she was in band and chorus. She was active in the Congregational Church and with the church youth groups. In 1951, she graduated cum laude from St. Luke's School of Nursing in Aberdeen, SD. After her graduation, she moved to Chamberlain where she met her husband. On June 12, 1952, she married Donald Leroy Miller in Redfield, SD. She resided in Chamberlain for 19 years, then in Mitchell for 8 years, then moved to Orem, Utah, and later retired in Sturgis. After her marriage, she joined the Roman Catholic Church and was a long-time parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Sturgis.

Kathy worked as a staff RN at Chamberlain Community Hospital from 1952 to 1954, school nurse at St. Joseph Indian School in Chamberlain in 1956, clinic RN at Chamberlain Clinic in 1959 to 1960, and from 1968 to 1969, charge nurse at Firesteel Heights Nursing Home in Mitchell from 1970 to 1972, Brady Memorial Nursing Home in Mitchell from 1972 to 1978, and Utah State Mental Hospital in Provo, UT, from 1980 to 1992.

Kathy was a generous and devoted wife, mother, and friend. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, baking, and tending a garden.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Miller, Spearfish; her daughter, Nancy (John) Gruidl, Macomb, IL; son, Timothy Miller, Mitchell; daughter, Theresa (Christopher) Tsoi, Ft. Collins, CO; son, Robert Miller, Salt Lake City, UT; daughter, Mary McElroy, Spokane, WA; daughter, Patricia McGee, Rapid City; daughter, Susan (John) Bird, Chanhassen, MN; fourteen grandchildren, Sarah and Lucy Gruidl, Nathan (Julie) Tsoi, Alexandra and Audrey Tsoi, Alyssa and Andrea Miller, Katie and Billy McElroy, Chelsy (Jon) Rich, Patrick and Tessa Jo McGee, Curtis, and Mia Bird; and two great-grandchildren, Breckin Norstegaard , and Jolynn Rich.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Curtis Buss and her sister, Corrine Hunstad.

A memorial has been established to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis.
