Kathryn L. Kari, 88, Sturgis, died Sunday, October 30, 2011 at the Sturgis Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be from 5 until 9 p.m. with the family present from 5 until 7 on Wednesday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, November 3, 2011 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Fr. Arnold Kari officiating. Burial follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to the Meade County Senior Center.
Kathryn was born March 2, 1923 near Strool, SD, on the family homestead ranch, to Charles and Kathryn (Harrington) Stewart. She grew up on the family ranch and attended country school. Following the completion of her education she worked for area ranchers.
On September 18, 1947 she married John Pious Kari at Strool. They worked on Johns' brothers ranch in Perkins County for one year before buying it. They spent the next 12 years operating their own ranch before moving to Sturgis. Kathryn worked cleaning houses and from 1972 until 1983 she worked in the kitchen at Ft. Meade. Following her retirement she continued to work at various jobs.
She liked to paint and was a successful artist. She also enjoyed crocheting.
Survivors include her husband John Kari, Sturgis; one daughter, Peggy "Sherry" Larson, Sturgis; two grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.
