From her earliest days growing up in Aberdeen, Kathy was known for her indomitable spirit, infectious energy, and a heart open wide to all she encountered. She graduated with the Class of 1970, carrying with her the dreams and determination that would come to define her life. Pursuing a lifelong calling, she completed a year of nursing studies at South Dakota State University, igniting a passion for service that she poured into a remarkable 40-year career as a surgical technician. For decades, Kathy provided care, comfort, and steady hands to countless patients and colleagues, forming friendships that would last a lifetime.

Those who were blessed to know Kathy remember her as the life of every gathering. Her quick wit and knack for spinning joke after joke made laughter abundant wherever she went. Vivacious and talented, she and Roger would often bring out their guitars, filling evenings with the sound of lively music, heartfelt songs, and precious memories. Her vibrant presence, whether around a campfire or in her own home, was a source of joy for all.

Kathy’s love for adventure was boundless. She found peace and exhilaration in the outdoors—casting her line while fishing, exploring wooded trails while hunting, camping under open skies, and enjoying tranquil walks by the river. Athletics were another of her passions, particularly women’s softball; she took pride in her time on the mound, pitching strikeouts and hitting memorable home runs—a testament to her competitive spirit and drive.

Her compassion was felt deeply, not just by her fellow people but equally by animals whose lives she quietly enriched. Strangers would quickly become friends in her welcoming company—a gift that leaves those who knew her with a legacy of acceptance and human connection. Above all, Kathy held steadfast to her faith and her love for her country, a bedrock that guided her through life’s joys and trials.

Kathy leaves behind a family that adored her and a circle of friends who admired her kindness and warmth. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Roger, her beloved daughter Kelly Peterson and son-in-law Bryan Peterson; her dear sister Kim Wynia and brother-in-law Ron Wynia; her brother Ted Schlichenmayer and sister-in-law Lana Schlichenmayer, her sister -in-law Kathy Schlichenmayer; her step-children Richard Johnson, Dewie Johnson, Debra Welsh (and Cliff Welsh), Dawn Johnson, Denise Kranhold (and Cory Kranhold), and Carly Butts-Carter (and Shawn Butts-Carter). Her legacy is held tenderly by nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and many devoted friends whose lives were forever enriched by her presence.

Kathy is also remembered with love by those who preceded her in death: her father Theodore Schlichenmayer, mother Audrey Schlichenmayer, her brother Cleo Schlichenmayer, her brother-in-law Tom Bell and step-son Danny Johnson.
