Keith V. Smith, 88, Hereford passed away and was called home surrounded by his family on Aug. 14, 2015.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. on Tue. Aug. 18 at Kinkade Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held in Sturgis at 2 p.m. Wed. Aug 19 at the First Presbyterian Church. Burial services will be held at the New Underwood Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the New Underwood Community Center.
Keith was born on July 28,1927 to Perry and Manda Smith in Dante, SD. He graduated from New Underwood high school in 1945. He taught grade school in Hereford for 2 years before entering the US Army in 1950. He spent 17 months in Korea as a team chief on a radio teletype. Later when he returned to the states he was stationed at Camp San Luis Obispo, as assistant motor pool Sergeant and mechanic foreman. Keith was given an honorable discharge in 1953. In 1954 he married his neighborhood gal, Deloris Oliver. In 1957 they started ranching in Whitewood Valley until 1964, then moved to Union Center area until 1968. They moved to the Perry and Manda Smith home place where he continued ranching until 1996 where he retired on the ranch. Keith was a member and deacon of the Hereford Baptist Church. He had a love for his cattle, ranching and hunting with his family and friends. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, he really enjoyed watching them participate in all their sporting events. Grandpa and Grandma were usually there to cheer them on.
To this union 6 children were born. Earl (Melody) Smith, Lynn (Gloria) Smith, Robby (Darla) Smith, Clinton (Kerri) Smith, Tina (Joel) Whipple, and Eric Smith.
He is survived by his wife Deloris of 61 years, all of his children, 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, sisters, Shirley (Wesley) Schuettpelz, and Nylia (Harold) Severson, brothers, Perry (Carol) Smith Jr., Robert L. Smith, Tom (Linda) Smith and brother-in-law Harold Delbridge.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Jack Smith, sister Karen Delbridge & sister-in-law Kay Smith.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for improvements to the New Underwood Cemetery.
