Kenneth Barton Sundstrom, 86, Newell, died Monday, September 22, 2008, at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center.

Visitation will be Wednesday from noon until 6:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Pastor Bruce Baum officiating. A private family burial will be held.

Kenneth was born September 1, 1922, at Twilight, SD, to Charles and Eulalia (Oens) Sundstrom. He attended school at Trail Creek. Kenneth worked at different ranches in the area until being drafted on December 16, 1944. He served in the US Army until his honorable discharge on November 19, 1946. He returned to South Dakota and worked in Miller. Kenneth later came back to western South Dakota where he continued to work on ranches. He also participated in rodeos.

Kenneth married Arlene Jaukkuri on January 3, 1965, in Newell. He worked several years for the Hafner Wool Company and the Belle Fourche Irrigation District. Kenneth had been in failing health for the last three years.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene Sundstrom, Newell; two sons, Curtis (Kay) Sundstrom and Sheldon (Spring) Sundstrom, all of Belle Fourche; one daughter, Melanie (Randy) Welke, Newell; one granddaughter, Stephanie Eichler; one brother, Walt Sundstrom, Nisland; brother-in-law, Gene Schaff; sister-in-law, Wyona Sundstrom; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, four sisters, and an infant son.

A memorial has been established.
