Larry Theodore Hines, 76, Sturgis, died Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City.
Visitation will be 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm Friday October 24, 2014, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be 10:00 am Saturday October 25, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Pastor Denzel Nonhof officiating.
Larry was born October 11, 1938 in Faith, South Dakota, to T.R. and Carrie (Dixon) Hines. He was homeschooled early on by his mother. The family moved to Whitewood where he grew up and attended grade school. In 1956, he graduated from Sturgis High School. He then went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science in math education from Black Hills State College. In 1965, Larry met Diane Cassell in Spearfish. He got his first teaching job in Broadus, MT and taught from 1963 to 1967. Larry received a grant from The National Science Foundation for his MS in 1968-69. He married Diane in Pierre on June 4, 1966, and to this union two daughters were born.
The couple moved to Sturgis in 1969, and he began teaching and coaching girls' basketball until 1995. At the time of his retirement in 1995, he had been recognized by the SDHSAA for 25 years of coaching.
He often spent his summers logging and harvesting grass seed. Larry enjoyed golf, bowling, and getting together with friends. He especially loved watching his grandchildren participate in sports.
Larry is survived by his wife, Diane Hines, Sturgis; daughters, Kelli (Pat) Buscher, Pierre, and Carmen (Scott) Brooks, Palm Desert, CA; four grandchildren, Nate, Meghan, Aiden, and Brody; and one brother, Clyde (Charlotte) Hines.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and an infant brother, Billy.
