Obituary

Larry Dean Horn, 89, passed away just minutes after sunrise at 5:30 AM on May 10, 2026, at the Fort Meade VA Hospital with his granddaughter, Tessa McIntosh, by his side.

Larry was born on July 24, 1936, in Huron, South Dakota, to Jim and Helen Horn. As the firstborn of four children, he learned how to stay busy at a young age. Between school and chores, he developed a lifelong work ethic that never left him. After serving 13 years in the United States Air Force, he spent the majority of his life working hard to provide a simple, comfortable life for himself and his family.

Larry had an unforgettable smile and loved to laugh and tell stories. He was a family man with many talents and passions, many of which trickled down through the generations he helped raise. He especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, and flying model airplanes. Family gatherings often ended around the kitchen table playing cards or dominoes together.

Over the years, Larry earned countless trophies and awards that reflected both his competitive spirit and his ability to excel at nearly anything that captured his interest. Sharp as a tack and endlessly curious, he spent much of his life learning new things, challenging his mind, and keeping up with the changing world around him.

In his later years, Larry enjoyed spending time at the Senior Citizens Center, where he could often be found playing pool and cards with the many friends he made there. Even after retirement, he stayed active by volunteering at the YMCA while also working part time as a delivery driver.

Larry found tranquility in mowing and caring for his yard. He took exceptional care of his home and vehicles and took pride in the property he worked so hard for. After 54 years in the same home, he earned the reputation of being a dependable neighbor who was always willing to lend a helping hand.

He was a man of his word and led by example. To Larry, lack of correction meant a lack of care, so he was always encouraging personal growth in the people closest to him. His love and mentorship extended far beyond his immediate family. Throughout his life, Larry “adopted” many children and grandchildren along the way, offering guidance, wisdom, and an example of a steady, faith-based life. He taught not only through words, but through consistency, humility, and quiet acts of service.

Larry’s absence leaves a kind of silence that is hard to describe — like the empty space where a mountain used to block the wind. He will be deeply missed.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Helen Horn, and his younger sister, Karen Seaton.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Brenda Horn; his four sons and their families: Randy and Pam Horn, Dan and Candace Horn, Steven Horn, and Kelly and Sheri Horn; his grandchildren, Tyler, Zack, Tessa, and Gabe; and his two great-granddaughters, Ruby and Lily. He is also survived by his brother, Gene Horn and his wife, Violet, and family; his sister, Judy Davis and family; and by Scott, C.J., and Trever, all of whom held a special place in his heart.

Services will be held at Calvary Chapel in Rapid City at 11:00 AM, followed by his honorary Final Salute at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota, at 3:00 PM.
