Obituary

Lieutenant Colonel Lathe Burton "Burt" Row, Jr., (US Army, Retired), of Deadwood, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2024, at the age of 92.

Born to a Black Hills pioneer family on January 2, 1932, in Syracuse, New York, he was the eldest son of Colonel Lathe Burton Row, Sr, and Constance Row (nee Clark) and a grandson of Horace Sevier Clark and Charlotte Clark (nee Cushman), originating Deadwood, South Dakota pioneers.

Due to his father's military career, they lived in various locations including New York, California, and Hawaii. While in Hawaii, as a youth, Burt was one of a few people to witness the Japanese planes arriving for the attack on Pearl Habor in 1941. When his father retired from the military, they settled in the Clark family hometown of Lead, South Dakota, where Burt spent most of his formative years.

After graduating from Lead High School in 1949, Burt enrolled in the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI), in Roswell, New Mexico to attend Junior College, graduating in 1951. Afterwards, he attended and graduated from the University of Colorado, with a degree in Business Administration and then received his commission to the United States Army, in 1953, where he was assigned to the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

While stationed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, he met and eventually married Evelyn Theresa Cavedo (of Richmond, Virginia), and had three children. During his career, he held many military assignments in Fort Belvoir, Virginia; Oahu, Hawaii; Heidelberg, Germany; Fort Carson, Colorado; Fort Benning, Georgia; Camp Rapid (Rapid City), South Dakota, and Huron, South Dakota (where he was served as an advisor to the South Dakota National Guard). His military contributions also included one tour of action in Korea and two tours of combat in Vietnam.

As a record of his military service, Burt had many significant contributions and was decorated numerous times, receiving the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Silver Service Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Parachutist Badge, National Defense Service Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal.

After a long and illustrious career in the Army and rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, he retired in 1975, after serving our Country for over 22 years.

Following his military career, Burt had many business endeavors in Real Estate, Retail, Mining, and Land Management.  He also remained active in the community, providing his support, and serving as a life-long member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Burt was a quiet and generous person, who loved people and genuinely extended trust, respect, and a very caring heart to all that crossed his path. He excelled at listening, had an easy friendliness about him and demonstrated an unwavering sense of duty to others and his Country.

His survivors include his children: John Row of Dallas, Texas, Robert Row of Phoenix, Arizona, and James Row of Houston, Texas; sister-in-law, Constance Foshay Row of Edgewood, Maryland; 5 grandchildren, and several nieces, and nephews, as well as many close and life-long friends.

Burt was preceded in death by his parents, Colonel, Lathe Burton Row, Sr., and Constance Clark Row, brother, Clark Row of Edgewood, Maryland, and his former wife, Evelyn Cavedo Row of Richmond, Virginia.

Committal service with full military honors will be held 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 29, 2024, at Black Hills National Cemetery, near Sturgis, SD, where he will join preceding family members and others who proudly served our country.
