Obituary

Lawrence "Larry" Dean Larive passed away on Sept. 25, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer.

A rosary will be offered Thursday at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spearfish.

Larry was born on Aug. 19, 1947, in Deadwood, to Edmond and Ellen (Opitz) Larive. Larry graduated from High School in Sundance, Wyo., and later attended Black Hills State University. After attending BHSU, Larry joined the Navy and traveled extensively. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 20, 1969, after completing two tours of duty in Vietnam, from which he received several medals of honor. Later, Larry would travel throughout the U.S. giving fire safety talks at schools and other venues. Among other passions, Larry loved hunting, drawing, playing cards and cribbage. He was also a great storyteller.

He is survived by his daughter, Tara Larive, Madison, Wis.; his mother, Ellen Larive, Spearfish; uncle, George Opitz, Spearfish; as well as several aunts, cousins and friends throughout the area.

Larry is preceded in death by his father, Edmond Larive, and his grandparents, John and Christine Opitz and Alex and Laura Larive.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Shriners Burn Hospital in Galveston, Texas.
